Understanding Cataracts

A cataract is a fogginess that overtakes the typically clear lens of the eye. This lens is responsible for focusing light so that you can process information and see clearly. When the lens is cloudy with a cataract, your eye cannot properly focus light. When you first visit our office, our eye doctor will evaluate your eyes to determine whether or not you have cataracts and provide treatment accordingly.

Causes of Cataracts

Cataracts generally occur because proteins break down in the lens of the eye, causing the lens to cloud up. Cataracts occur most frequently in older adults, and a person’s risk of developing cataracts increases significantly at 40 years of age. People who smoke cigarettes, drink heavily or have a family history of cataracts are also more likely to develop them. Other conditions that can also bring on cataracts, including diabetes, steroid medication use, eye surgery, and eye injuries.

Symptoms of Cataracts

The symptoms of cataracts are plentiful and vary from person to person. Common symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Cloudy or foggy vision
  • Sensitivity to bright lights
  • Sudden prescription changes
  • Double vision
  • Halos around lights (especially at nighttime)
  • Reduced night vision
  • Color changes

Generally, cataracts are painless. Cataract diagnosis requires an eye exam to look behind your retina. If you are diagnosed with cataracts, our eye doctor will help you select the most effective treatment option.

Cataract Treatment

Cataracts are often treated with new prescription glasses or contacts. If the cataract has not yet worsened to the point that surgery is a necessity, you may be able to use these options to see clearly until your next appointment. In some cases, people need surgery to remove a cataract. Several surgery options are available. Often, the lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial lens that allows the patient to see clearly. Many people wonder if cataract treatment is safe. Cataract treatment is performed regularly and there are minimal risks associated with it.
