.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a condition that affects your optic nerve. It is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it is a progressive disease that usually has no early warning signs. In advanced stages, it can cause permanent vision loss and blindness if left untreated.

What Are The Most Common Glaucoma Symptoms?

There are different types of glaucoma, angle-closure and open-angle. The latter accounts for nearly 90 percent of glaucoma cases. Gradual vision loss can occur, usually starting with defects in your peripheral vision. Conversely, angle-closure is rarer, but this condition is quite dangerous, often creating acute symptoms such as eye pain, nausea, and severe headaches.

Who Is At An Elevated Risk For Glaucoma?

Individuals over 60 and those with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension or diabetes can be more prone to this disease. Your family history plays a part in your risk for developing glaucoma. If a family member has dealt with glaucoma, you may be at a higher risk for the condition. African Americans and Hispanics are often affected by glaucoma at higher rates. Taking certain medications that increase the pressure in the eyes can also increase your odds. Additionally, the risk level can be elevated for smokers.

How Can Our Optometrists Detect Glaucoma?

Pupil dilation is necessary to get a closer look at the optic nerve. We will also take a measurement of your eye pressure. Routine eye tests can also detect signs of peripheral vision loss.

Can Glaucoma Be Prevented?

Being active, avoiding smoking, and consuming a nutrient-rich diet are all excellent preventative measures against glaucoma. While it cannot be prevented altogether, you should never underestimate the importance of a routine eye exam. Remember, only an eye doctor can detect this issue early while it is easier to treat. Skipping eye exams, especially as you get older, puts you at higher risk for not getting the proper treatment as needed.
